The 5 Best Solo Travel Movies

  1. Wild (2014)

One of the most inspiring movies about a real female adventurer is Wild, based on the memoir by Cheryl Strayed. After her mother’s death, Cheryl, played by Reese Witherspoon, hikes the Pacific Crest Trail; a 1,100-mile trek through the wilderness, with little experience. She faces many challenges along the way and learns valuable lessons about life and herself. This journey is a powerful portrayal of the physical and emotional challenges that she faced and a testament to the power of determination and the ability of one woman to overcome seemingly impossible obstacles.

2. Mrs Harris Goes to Paris (2022)

Mrs Harris Goes to Paris is a movie about a woman daring to dream and then, taking a chance. A middle-aged widow named Mrs. Harris who lives in London and works as a cleaner for a wealthy family, has always dreamed of visiting Paris, the city of love and fashion. She becomes obsessed with one client’s haute couture Dior dress, and it inspires her to buy her own. She embarks on a solo adventure (accompanied here and there by a wonderful supporting cast) that will change not only her own outlook -- but the very future of the House of Dior. Mrs. Harris learns to let go of her past and embrace the present, ultimately finding true happiness in the City of Lights.

 3. Thelma & Louise (1991)

Thelma & Louise is a badass film starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis. The two best friends Thelma and Louise go on a road trip to escape their mundane lives; however, things take a turn for the worse when Thelma is sexually assaulted by a man they meet at a bar and Louise kills him in self-defense. The two best friends then go on the run, pursued by the police and the media. As they journey deeper into the American Southwest, they begin to confront their personal demons and discover a newfound sense of freedom and empowerment. Their journey portrays loyal female friendship, empowerment, and the search for freedom and identity.

4. Eat, Pray, Love (2010)

A classic that can’t go unmentioned. Eat, Pray Love follows Julia Roberts as Liz Gilbert, a woman who embarks on a journey of rediscovery to find happiness again after a painful divorce. Traveling to Italy, India, and Bali, she learns what real self-care means, discovers the beauty of the world, and the power of love. If you’re looking for a perfect solo travel adventure, this is a must-watch.

5. Under The Tuscan Sun (2003)

Under The Tuscan Sun is a romantic comedy-drama film based on the memoir of the same name written by Frances Mayes. The story follows Frances, a recently divorced writer who decides to buy a villa in the beautiful Tuscany region of Italy to begin a new chapter in her life. As she begins to renovate her new home and explore the local culture, she meets a variety of amazing people who help her navigate the challenges of living in a foreign country. Along the way, she also discovers the beauty and joy of living in Italy and learns to find love and happiness in unexpected places. This movie is a heart-warming story of self-discovery and the healing power of travel.

These are some of the greatest movies about solo female travelers and a powerful way to showcase the strength, determination, and courage we have as women. So, whether you’re looking to escape reality, experience different cultures, a sign to not give up on your dreams, or are on a journey of self-discovery, you should indulge in one of these on your next movie night!
